"Hello, my name is Alexis better known by "Lexi", and I am honored to serve as the Vice President for Self-Advocates of Indiana. I am deeply committed to advocating for inclusion, empowerment, and community impact. I represent the voices of self-advocates in various capacities, including as the Self Advocate Representative for the INAPSE board and the DDRS Advisory Council. I also contribute to outreach and marketing efforts as a member of the INSILC Marketing and Outreach Committee, and I'm proud to be part of the Speakers Bureau, sharing insights and inspiring others. In my professional role, I work with LifeCourse Connect/Quillo, where I focus on creating meaningful connections and resources. Additionally, I represent self-advocates as a consumer representative for SertomaStar. When I have free time, I enjoy time with my 'perfect' cat Nico.  I love my audible books and have the best sense of humor if I do say so myself.  I enjoy gaining knowledge and strongly dislike being idle.  I have no issue with talking about my wants and needs.    This is why I am a Connections Rock Star….."

Lexi is an amazing advocate!  She has agreed to help Connections with their presentation at the Charting the LifeCourse Showcase 2025 Conference later this month by giving an interview and she is also assisting with a Lunch and Learn for Connections.  What an amazing resource for case managers and individuals!  Lexi you ROCK!

Over this past year Morgan has had so many changes; she has moved in with a friend of hers and has not only started one new job, but TWO! She works part-time 3 days a week at a local coffee shop that donates 100% of their profits to nonprofits. She is an important part of their team, decorating their coffee bags, cleaning up beans, and jumping in other places where needed. Morgan is such a spunky personality who provides her coworkers and customers with smiles every day she works. In addition to her main job that she works 3 days a week, she also walks multiple dogs in the neighborhood she lives in almost daily. When not working, Morgan can be found in the art room or singing her heart out in karaoke at the local day program 2 days a week. She participates in Special Olympics bowling, track, and basketball. As a new activity, Morgan just joined a karate class on the weekends! She is a light in all she does and always brightens the days of others. Way to go Morgan...and keep being a rockstar!

Zack graduated high school in 2019 with dreams of becoming a Machinist. He also wanted to become more active, independent, and working in his community—and he’s making it all happen! He’s pursuing his dream of becoming a machinist by attending Ivy Tech, where he’s excelling with stellar grades. Alongside his studies, Zack has landed a job at Strack and Van Til, where he does a little bit of everything—bagging, carrying out groceries, stocking shelves, cleaning, and even assisting with propane changes.

Through waiver services, Zack is also building life skills that boost his independence. He now manages his purchases with a debit card, organizes his time with a virtual calendar, and even uses Uber to get to college. Zack is also on the road to getting his driver’s license! He’s already earned his permit and is actively taking driving lessons.

When Zack isn’t rocking adult life, he enjoys playing video games and spending quality time with his mom and his beloved therapy dog, Elsa. Zack has even taught Elsa some pretty impressive tricks, which his team loves to see!

Zack’s hard work, determination, and positive energy are truly inspiring!

Per Luke's parents: "Luke had an amazing opportunity this summer to go to Auburn University to attend their first ever Power Soccer camp.  He spent 4 days learning skills and training with some other exceptional teens from across the country and some phenomenal coaches.  The experience, skills, and confidence he gained from Auburn camp is something that wouldn't be easy to find elsewhere. He had a great time and loved being able to connect with the other great players and get to know them on a more personal level. We are forever grateful for the time at Auburn this summer.

Luke has now been selected as the first ever honoree of the Drew Cunningham Mentorship Program with USPSA - United States Power Soccer Association. To say Luke is excited is an understatement.  We are SO proud of our boy and how hard he works for what he wants.  He doesn't let anything or anyone get in his way or hold him down.  Congratulations Luke!!

Drew Cunningham Mentorship Program Honoree
The Drew Cunningham Mentorship Program is excited to announce the honoree of this year’s inaugural award, Luke Bertsch. At age 14, Luke plays for the Hancock County Hot Shots in Indiana. His dedication to power soccer, high-level skill set, and competitive drive exemplify Drew’s spirit. We are excited to support Luke’s next steps in his pursuit of a professional power soccer career.

We acknowledge and appreciate the significant work and effort by every athlete that applied to this year’s DCMP. It was impressive to see the passion of all the athletes, which made the decision nearly impossible to make. You are the future of the sport and we look forward to seeing you all on the court.

The program gears up in 2025 when Luke begins the mentorship and prepares to attend a U.S. Power National Team training camp as a guest. Congratulations Luke!"

Kyson enjoys participating in Special Olympics. He is active on the basketball team and in swimming. In fact, swimming is one of his all-time favorite activities. In the summer, he spends a lot of time at nearby reservoirs swimming and spending time with family and friends.

Kyson loves music. His favorite song is “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan because it reminds him of his late mother. Kyson tells his Case Manager often that his mom is in Heaven and always in his heart.

The American flag is very important to Kyson. It is not unusual to see him set up a chair near the flagpole in his yard and watch Old Glory sway in the breeze. His Case Manager is always hopeful for nice weather when it is time for team meetings, because that means there is a good chance Kyson will be waiting for her under the flag!

Kyson receives great support from his grandmother, father, extended family, and friends. What makes Kyson so special is his huge heart and how important it is to him to be supportive of others. As you can see, Kyson was awarded the honor of being prom king because he brings so much joy and love to those he encounters. Thank you for being you, Kyson! communities.

Jessica is a young woman on the autism spectrum who learned to do beading during her Project Search internship her last year of high school. The Project Search team received a Creative Classroom grant from Lawrence Township Education Foundation to make Meditation Beads for Community Hospital North. Out of all the Project Search interns at the time, she was chosen to work on this project. During the internship, over 180 bracelets were given to patients at Community Hospital North Cancer Center. The project was then expanded, and bracelets were given to all Lawrence Township bus drivers and transportation staff following the tragic death of Amy Beverland Elementary principal, Mrs. Susan Jordan. At the end of the internship, Jess and her instructor created her own Etsy Page as a way for her to continue what she had learned. Jess has continued making bracelets at home and has added lots of new items to her collection such as earrings, rosary beads, keychains, bookmarks and even facemask lanyards! She loves coming up with new designs and posting them before the next holiday is coming, so that her customers can show off her designs in spirited fashion!
