This training was presented by Shelley Anderson, MT-BC, of Notes 2 Live By. It defined AAC as well as who needs and uses it. AAC devices were discussed, including how to get a device, how to advocate for a device, and what goes on a device. Shelley also defined communication partners, high/low tech, direct selection, and scanning. Myths about AAC were presented along with the Communication Bill of Rights. Finally, Shelley presented information that AAC users want you to know as well as current needs in the field.

This first part of this training is a short presentation by Nicole Hearns of Caregiver Homes on the CIH Waiver service Structured Family Caregiving. This training presents a brief overview of eligible conditions meeting level of care for waiver services. It also defines the “Fatal Four” within the IDD community, including signs and symptoms, factors that can put our individuals at risk, and preventable measures that can be taken. Also discussed are lesser-known diagnoses/conditions that individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities may experience. Goodwill is CARF Accredited. There is a Good Guide program for employees at Evansville Goodwill. They have a Senior Community Service Employment Program for individuals over 55 years of age where they are in a work-based learning environment that pays minimum wage for 48 months to find unsubsidized employment. The Goodskills Academy helps individuals to learn how to navigate the digital world and can earn certificates for programs learned. The Excel Center helps individuals get their Core 40 diploma and an industry recognized credential. This program has free on-site childcare and transportation in addition to a life coach and flexible scheduling. The Opportunity Services program teaches soft skills (organizational, time management), digital skills (basic internet, email) and resume development, interview skills, and online job searches. Included is a list of all Goodwill’s in IN which includes websites, addresses, phone numbers. While some programs are specific to Evansville Goodwill, most have identical or similar programs.

The presentation by Renee Kowal, Director of Homecare Partnerships with Homestyle Direct, provided some statistics about food insecurity and how medically tailored meals can prevent cancers, hospitalizations, etc. Renee explained the different types of medically tailored meals: renal, diabetes, heart healthy, gluten restricted, and power packed. Homestyle Direct has undergone a website transformation and has upgraded their trays to have 3 compartments. Menus are updated every 4 months. FedEx delivers meals so that even those in rural areas have access to HD meals. Individuals may even track their shipment. Storing and heating options were included as well as information about eco-friendly boxes.

Lesa Paddack, Regional Director of INsource, presented information about Special Education laws
and Civil Rights Legislation. She explained the purpose of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) which is to ensure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education. Lesa explained that Parent Centers serve families of children from birth through age 26 and all disabilities. She explained that INsource can assist parents in understanding their educational rights, give parents information about the special education process, help parents and schools work together and develop positive working relationships, and help parents become strong advocates for their children. They assist parents by phone and email, training classes, support and information at school meetings, ways for schools and families to work together, special education liaisons, transition-aged students with training on self-advocacy, special education for school interpreters, and a wealth of resources on www.insource.org

The training included LGBTQIA+ awareness including pronoun preferences, risks for LGBTQIA+ youth, risks for LGBTQIA+ adults, and sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). The presentation explained what it means to be transgender and challenges trans people face, as well as how to be an ally and interact with transgender people. The training also included information about the coming out process (identity confusion, identity comparison, identity tolerance, identity acceptance, identity pride, and identity synthesis.)

The Special Needs Trusts presentation by Sarah Geis, Senior Director of Engagement with The Arc Master Trust included information about the types of Special Needs Trusts (Third Party and First Party as well as Pooled and Private trusts), eligibility, and how trusts can be set up and by whom. Sarah explained who can be a trustee and their responsibilities. Sarah also explained how trusts can be used to support the beneficiary and how sometimes Tandem Trusts can be used as well. Lastly, Sarah listed some things to consider determining if one or more than one is right.
The presentation by Jeff Hughes, Owner of Koremen, LLC, on HMA-1 and HMA-2 assessments covered those involved in a Home Modification including the individual, their family, the funder, the specifier (Koremen), the contractor, code inspections, and the evaluator (Koremen). Jeff explained a SPEC (specification/HMA-1) which is a document which sets the scope of the work for the modification, and the Exam (evaluation/HMA-2). Jeff also listed several environmental strategies that could possibly negate the need for a modification if an environmental strategy is effective or could possibly assist the individual while waiting on a contractor to be able to complete the job. Jeff also touched on different funders of environmental modifications.

Information presented in the training included Supported Decision-Making as a concept and its benefits in addition to why guardianship should only be recommended as a last resort. It also covered options to support decision-making. Detriments of those denied self-determination and, alternatively, benefits of those with more self-determination were included.

This training was presented by Renea Semones, Area 15 Supervisor for Vocational Rehabilitation (VR). The training gave a brief overview of other services besides VR within the Bureau of Rehabilitative Services (BRS) of the Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services (DDRS). It went into detail on the focus of VR, the process overview, referrals, intake/application, disability priority category determination, eligibility, severity determination, IPE development, and service provision.

Tina Lambert, VR Counselor, presented VR 101. She explained the process: Referral, Intake/
Application, Eligibility Determination, Plan Development (IPE), Service Implementation, Goal
Achievement/Closure. Three levels of severity are MSD (Individual with a most significant disability), SD (Individual with a Significant Disability), and NSD (Individual with a Non-significant Disability). Applicants who receive SSI or SSDI are presumed eligible for VR services. CIE (Competitive, Integrated Employment) is minimum wage or higher in an integrated setting where the employee has the same opportunities for advancement as people without disabilities who have similar positions. Stabilization is 90 days successful employment after an individual has achieved maximum level of independence on the job. Post-employment services may be available under specific circumstances and people can reapply if needed.
